 About us  

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) incorporating the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM), is an internationally recognised specialist medical education institution responsible for the training, examinations, specialist qualification, and continuing professional development of all anaesthetists and pain medicine specialists in Australia and New Zealand.  

The college's purpose is to serve our communities by leading high quality patient care in anaesthesia, perioperative and pain medicine, optimising health and reducing the burden of pain.  

About the opportunity  

An exciting opportunity to lead meaningful health equity initiatives and embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi across a national medical college. This newly created role supports ANZCA in progressing health equity for Māori, with a focus on leading the implementation, monitoring and review of ANZCA’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi Action Plan 2025–2028. 

The role is offered on a 2-year fixed-term contract, part-time basis (3 days a week). The role will be based at the New Zealand National Office in Wellington. Flexible working options are available.  

This position reports to the Executive Director, New Zealand.      

Key responsibilities 

  • Lead the implementation, monitoring and review of ANZCA’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi Action Plan 2025–2028  
  • Provide cultural and strategic advice on tikanga Māori and culturally safe practice  
  • Build and maintain relationships with Māori health organisations and networks  
  • Support the development of cultural safety and Māori cultural competence initiatives  
  • Promote Māori workforce development and scholarship initiatives  
  • Support ANZCA strategic initiatives and New Zealand office activities 

About the team  

The New Zealand team is a small collective group of experts in their chosen fields, communication, policy, SIMG and committee’s support. 

Keys to your success   

You will bring strong kaupapa Māori knowledge, experience within Māori health or social services, and the confidence to navigate both Māori and non-Māori contexts. 

Essential requirements 

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. health services management, policy, social services), or equivalent experience 
  • Strong knowledge of tikanga Māori and working understanding of te reo Māori 
  • Experience working in Māori health and/or social services 
  • Understanding of Māori health issues and inequities 
  • Proven experience in project design, coordination and delivery 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills 
  • Experience providing advice and briefing to committees and senior leaders 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively 
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office capability
