Description

To provide direct instruction to multi-age and multi-level Native American students for Summer Language Program that includes providing instruction in language skills and Native American Studies. 

One or More Positions (Elementary, Middle School, High School)

  • Summer Program Position
  • Training Days: Tuesday-Thursday, June 30, July 1, and July 2 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm @ extracurricular rate of pay
  • Hours Per Day: Monday through Friday, July 6-24 from 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm @ summer school rate of pay
  • One hour of debriefing each day for a total of 15 hours @ extracurricular rate of pay
  • Certified Miscellaneous Salary
     

Responsibilities

  1. Provide direct instructional services to multi-age and multi-level Native American students.
  2. Organize appropriate instructional programs and activities within the summer program curriculum to provide for individual student differences.
  3. Be able to maintain discipline and use effective management skills.
  4. Utilize and maintain district/building curricular and student learning objectives.
  5. Maintain appropriate student records to document performance and success of Native American students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing of English.
  6. Make individual assessments of student needs.
  7. Plan and implement effective lessons and appropriate learning activities.
  8. Involve parents/guardians of Native American children in their educational program.
  9. Encourage communication between the program and school communities.
  10. Attend staff/planning meetings.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by program coordinator or building administrator(s).

Qualifications

  1. Qualifies for a Washington State teaching certificate. If possessing an initial or provisional certificate, the candidate must hold the appropriate endorsement.
  2. Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals, and provides an environment conducive to learning.
  3. Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward self-discipline.
  4. Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  5. Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  6. Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning.
  7. Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet students' needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional skills.
  8. Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through modeling appropriate demeanor, behavior, and attire.
  9. Sets and attains high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources so that accomplishment and growth occurs.
  10. Develops favorable relationships with students; listens to, cares for, and works collaboratively with them.
  11. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.
  12. Demonstrates the ability to learn new ideas and skills and to solve problems; the possession of a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 is expected. (This requirement may be waived if an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants for a specific position exists.)
  13. Aware of current educational developments and applications, works collaboratively with others; believes in the importance of education, and interested in the welfare of all students.
  14. Uses democratic processes to work out problems in a supportive and understanding non-authoritarian manner.
  15. Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record-keeping activities.
  16. Knowledge of effective teaching strategies related to the appropriate age of instruction. Demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in a classroom setting.
  17. Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the instructional/learning process.
  18. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.
  19. Willingness and commitment to participate in professional collaboration and student supervision.
  20. Have experience in working with culturally, socially, and economically diverse student and parent populations.
  21. Demonstrate leadership abilities in organizing, implementing, and maintaining an effective, collaborative instructional program with the school staff that includes the ability to clearly articulate the elements and implementation of active learning, inclusivity, and other effective practices for Native American students.

Additional Information

Monetary terms as defined in the collective bargaining agreement between the district and the Spokane Education Association. Length of service is coterminous with meeting the needs of the summer school program. Current amount of pay is the Summer School Programs rate.

  1. Work Schedule – Days and hours (listed above) are subject to change depending on program and district needs. 
  2. Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays –  Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement (https://www.spokaneschools.org/Page/314) as negotiated.  
  3. Benefits Highlights:

    • School District Employees participate in the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) public pension plan.  Employees can choose from a lifetime retirement pension plan or a hybrid pension and investment plan that contributes between 5% and 15% of wages to retirement. When employees meet plan requirements and retire, they are guaranteed a monthly benefit for the rest of their life from the employer-funded pension.
      • Employees can also participate in voluntary savings programs to increase retirement savings such as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program or by participating in a 403(b) retirement plan through the District’s plan manager, OMNI.
