Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Project Officer

Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (WMHSAC) has been delivering culturally appropriate, holistic primary health care in South Hedland and surrounding Pilbara communities for more than 30 years. Our multidisciplinary services are focused on improving health and wellbeing through accessible, culturally safe and community-centred care.

About the Role:

This role is focused on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through culturally appropriate health education, health promotion, early intervention and referral services. Working collaboratively with clients, families, community members, health professionals and external organisations, you will help address key health and wellbeing issues affecting our community.

Responsibilities of the role:

• Provide health education, health promotion and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.
• Build positive relationships with clients, families and community members.
• Provide information, support and referrals to help meet client needs.
• Support health and wellbeing activities for young people, families and the wider community.
• Promote healthy choices and support programs around tobacco, alcohol and other drug use.
• Work closely with Aboriginal Health Workers, health professionals and community services.
• Maintain accurate client records, data and reports.
• Support team activities, community programs and service improvement.
• Follow workplace health, safety, infection control and professional standards.
• Demonstrate Wirraka Maya’s values of Respect, Integrity, Leadership, Innovation, Customer Focus and Teamwork.
• Undertake other duties as required.

About you:

• passionate about improving health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Has the ability to builds strong, respectful relationships with clients, families, communities, leaders and service providers.
• Understands and works respectfully within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, values and ways of doing business.
• Has knowledge of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Can manage competing priorities, work independently and meet deadlines.
• Works collaboratively with health professionals, community services and external organisations.
• Has strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with initiative and a team-focused approach.
• Is committed to culturally safe, client-centred and professional service delivery.
• Has experience in health education, health promotion, training or intervention programs focused on reducing tobacco use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Holds a qualification in health sciences, education, community services or a related field, or has equivalent relevant experience.
