POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Native American Liaison

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  2. New Mexico Public Education Department Licensure in School Counselor or Teacher

OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: To assist in creating a school environment in which Native American students are encouraged to develop their unique capabilities within the affective as well as the cognitive areas.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Follow local, state and federal law and adhere to Public Education Department and

       Local School Board Policy.

  1. Consult with school personnel regarding culturally and linguistically responsive instruction and curriculum and work directly with Native American students at assigned school sites.
  2. Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  3. Work with individual students or student groups in order to assist them in relating to others, to develop skills in communication, self-awareness, and decision making.
  4. Assist students in resolving affective and academic problems, which may arise.
  5. Work with students to become aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses and to develop skills, which will enable them to constructively deal with educational demands.
  6. Work with students regarding course selection according to class level, state requirements, interests, and future plans of the individual student helping them to understand how it relates to future job professions and possibilities. (Secondary)
  7. Consult with school personnel and parents regarding the academic, social and personal development of students and regarding any areas of concern with classroom processes and personal guidance and support.
  8. Act as a liaison between the school, students, and support agencies in the community and facilitates student referrals to appropriate agencies.
  9. Perform other relevant tasks as may be assigned.

REPORTS TO: Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year will be in accordance with current schedule for Certified Employee. Salary Schedule will be determined by individual training and experience level on the current Certified Employee Salary Schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

PHYSICAL LEVEL RATING: This position will require the employee to function at a "medium" physical capacity as defined by Workman's Compensation statutes. "Medium" physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
