Description
Based in Brisbane (preferred), Sydney or Melbourne and reporting to the Senior Indigenous Business Officer our Indigenous Business Officer’s overall objective is to advance the economic development and growth of Indigenous businesses.
You will be directly involved in fostering strong relationships with Indigenous stakeholders, handling registrations and certifications, conducting audits, and maintaining accurate supplier profiles, all whilst driving Indigenous initiatives to their fullest potential.
Key responsibilities
Champion Indigenous cultural values by supporting cultural integrity, learning, and workforce development across the organisation and its stakeholders.
Manage Indigenous business registrations, including assessing applications, verifying eligibility, processing registrations, following up incomplete applications, and referring complex Joint Venture cases.
Conduct registration, certification, and audit interviews (in person, phone, or video), prepare supporting documentation, and provide recommendations for Senior Indigenous Business Officer approval.
Support certification processes by responding to supplier enquiries and encouraging registered businesses to become certified.
Undertake annual audits of registered and certified suppliers, prepare audit reports, identify potential Joint Ventures, and escalate issues where appropriate.
Maintain accurate supplier records by assisting with profile updates, resolving enquiries, and ensuring data integrity within the CRM system.
Provide insights and stakeholder support by identifying trends, responding to enquiries, and escalating complex matters to senior staff.
Contribute to workplace health and safety by maintaining safe work practices, reporting hazards, and participating in WHS improvement initiatives.
Skills And Experiences
Key selection criteria
Specialist knowledge and attributes
Demonstrated understanding of business structures, how businesses are managed, how they operate within the Indigenous business sector, and an understanding of the statutory / regulatory bodies: Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC) and Office of Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC).
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies, cultures and issues affecting Indigenous Australians in business.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social dynamics, relationships and protocols of the Indigenous community and the issues and interests of that community.
Demonstrated written and verbal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Cultural sensitivity and a commitment to Indigenous self-determination and empowerment.
Knowledge, skills and experience
Proven experience as a business officer or a similar role, preferably within an Indigenous Business or community.
Demonstrated experience in supporting strong working relationships both internally and externally
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to manage and prioritise workloads within tight timeframes.
Familiarity with government and corporate Indigenous procurement and other initiatives related to Indigenous economic development.
Familiarity with funding opportunities and grant application processes for Indigenous businesses.
Strong organisational skills.
Additional requirements
Attend regular and ad hoc meetings and training as required.
Provide routine reporting as scheduled and ad hoc as required.
Any other tasks as directed by Management, based on organisational requirements.
This position is designated as requiring a satisfactory National Police Check as an inherent requirement. Appointment to the role is subject to the successful completion of a criminal history check and the provision of a clearance deemed acceptable by Supply Nation in line with policy. Rescreening is also required at regular intervals and under specific conditions.
