Carers WA is the peak body representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations providing a range of support services, supporting Carers across Western Australia. About the Role:

As the First Nations Wellbeing and Engagement Officer, you will be instrumental in improving access and inclusion of First Nations Carers and supporting and improving their quality of life.

You will be responsible for building strong partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to minimise barriers for First Nations carers accessing the Carer Gateway. You will also actively promote the Carer Gateway more widely in Aboriginal communities and directly support carers through Carer Support Planning processes. The Carer Gateway is a service established by Carers WA following the award of a tender as the lead Regional Delivery Partner for the new Integrated Carer Support Services (ICSS) in WA. Commencement of service delivery began in April 2020.

This role is predominately outreach and combines community development work with ACCOs and the Aboriginal community, whilst also contributing to a collaborative, inclusive team environment and communicating professionally and empathetically with carers. You will also actively contribute to our Aboriginal Working Group, which along with Traditional Owners and community Elders, shapes our business and how we engage with carers and organisations from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Foster meaningful partnerships with ACCOs to improve support and reduce barriers to accessing supports.
  2. Promote the Carer Gateway, raising awareness of available services and supports.
  3. Deliver a culturally appropriate, carer focused service which consults with carers and involves carers in planning, service delivery and evaluation.
  4. Conduct Carer Star planning sessions for carers seeking services and support over the phone and in-person and conduct referral processes to services and supports identified in the Carer Plan.
  5. Actively contribute to Carers WA’s Aboriginal Working Group.
  6. Balance outreach and community development work with one-on-one support for carers.

This is a full-time fixed-term position to 30 June 2027. The position attracts a salary of $87,672 p.a., plus super and salary packaging, 5 weeks annual leave (with17.5% leave loading on annual leave days) and two wellness days per annum.

Essential Selection Criteria:

  1. Experience building partnerships and connections in the Aboriginal community and working with the Aboriginal community to minimise barriers to Aboriginal people accessing community services.
  2. Experience working directly with clients including completing intake, planning, support and referral processes for clients within an area of carer support including health, aged care, disability, or mental health.
  3. Proven competence with person centred practice supporting individuals to increase independence, participation and wellbeing.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing Aboriginal communities to access support services and experience in working with the Aboriginal community to reduce these barriers.
  5. Willingness to work flexibly, including active participation in change management.
  6. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills in a community service or health-based context.
  7. High level of competency using computer software including Microsoft Office Suite, and/or customised client databases, as well as virtual communication modes (phone, skype, Zoom).
  8. Current C class drivers licence and National Police Clearance issued within the last 3 months (to be provided upon employment).
