Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Research Officer

About the role

Mater Research is looking for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Officer to join the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE). This permanent full-time role will be based at our South Brisbane campus.

The role provides support to the Safer Baby SEEK project to drive Strengths-based Education, Empowerment and Knowledge for help-seeking during pregnancy.

Salary range: $47.13 - $51.55 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

• Working with the Safer Baby SEEK and Stillbirth CRE’s Indigenous research teams to assist in the co-design of research and resources for Indigenous families and health care providers.
• Identify key sites and build relationships with key stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, peak advocacy groups and health services such as CATSINaM and NACCHO.
• Facilitate community consultations to explore enablers, barriers and experiences of help seeking during pregnancy.
• Collaborate with researchers, community Elders, lived experience representatives, and healthcare professionals across rural and remote maternity services in several jurisdictions including but not limited to South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland.
• Adhere to core principles of lived experience involvement in research.
• Assist with the preparation and coordination of submissions to Human Research Ethics and Governance Committees, as required.
• Participate in collaborator meetings and present at academic meetings/conferences (may require interstate travel).
• Communicate with and facilitate involvement of the Stillbirth CRE Indigenous Advisory Group (IAG).

About you

You will have a tertiary qualification with a background in public health, Indigenous health, midwifery, nursing, psychology, or related disciplines. You will also meet the below criteria:

• Demonstrated knowledge of maternity care.
• Demonstrated ability to use communication skills to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability across the Microsoft Suite of programs with skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Zoom.
• Ability to achieve objectives operating within complex organisations structures
• A strong commitment to culturally safe research and Indigenous health equity
• Ability to multi-task across competing responsibilities
• Proactive in identifying process and systems improvement and solving problems
• Ability both to show initiative and work independently, and work effectively as part of a team
• Highly organised with meticulous attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and commitments and work under pressure
