Position Title: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Worker
Location: Brisbane Recovery Services – Moonyah, Red Hill
Employment Type: Full-Time | Monday to Friday (9am–5pm, with flexible working arrangements)
Reports To: Centre Manager
Classification: SCHADS Level 4

Why this role matters

The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug (AOD) programs including withdrawal management, residential and non-residential rehabilitation, and harm reduction programs. Salvos services go beyond addressing the core issues and challenges associated with problematic substance abuse and provide participants a place of hope, compassion, and dignity to recover safely.

About the role

As the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Worker, you will provide culturally appropriate support and guidance to participants of the Brisbane Recovery Services Centre (AOD). This role plays a key part in strengthening cultural connection and awareness across services and enhancing the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples accessing support in QLD.

How you will make an impact

  • Develop or source culturally appropriate resources and training materials for staff and clients.
  • Facilitate or support Yarning Circles and Learning Circles that align with the Cultural Capability and Competency Framework.
  • Conduct regular reviews of the site environment to ensure cultural safety.
  • Work with the clinical team to ensure individual case plans reflect cultural needs.
  • Create and implement localised strategies to communicate and embed cultural capability practices.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with Indigenous organisations to improve participant access and support pathways.
  • Stay informed on relevant state and national policies affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

What you will bring

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (This is a genuine occupational requirement under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (QLD).
  • Relevant experience in a similar role is highly regarded.
  • Proven ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and service providers.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary challenges and strengths within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Capacity to provide culturally appropriate responses to complex and diverse community needs.
  • Ability to influence and support leadership in delivering culturally informed services.
  • Valid Blue Card (Working with Children Check) is required
