Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation that aims to empower Aboriginal people to take control of their individual, family, and community health and wellbeing needs through our clinical and community programs.

Our main services are in Wellington, Dubbo, Western Sydney, Penrith, Nepean, and Blue Mountains, and we provide outreach services to other towns and communities through our regional programs.

About the Role:

The Young Strong and Deadly Coordinator works in partnership with primary care providers, consumers & carers to deliver an improved service response to early identification & treatment of young people aged 14-24 years with or at risk of serious mental illness. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging local experienced Aboriginal cultural knowledge holders to explore the positive application of cultural concepts that can improve individual, family and community mental health.
  • Use cultural concepts and activities to reduce anti-social behaviours and reduce the risk of youth engaging in behaviours that negatively impact on their mental health.
  • Facilitation of education and training to primary care providers to enhance the recognition and treatment of young people at risk of serious mental illness and/or experiencing first episode psychosis. This includes general information on assessment and treatment and for more interested primary care workers; skills-based training on specific interventions.
  • Facilitation of prompt provision of advice and support to primary health care providers in order to prevent or manage a crisis situation.
  • Develop clear referral pathways and protocols into primary health and other appropriate settings for young people who access the service.
  • Work in collaboration with Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services to facilitate appropriate interventions for young people who have co-morbid mental health and drug and alcohol problems.
  • Consult and work in collaboration with the families of young people who are referred to the service, to assist those families to support the wellbeing of their family member. This will include the provision of support and education.
  • Monitor and evaluate the service provided, including the outcomes for consumers and carers.
  • Model and participate in WACHS’s commitment to consumers and carers as partners in care.
  • Collect client outcome measures and consumer satisfaction surveys. Experience, Qualifications & Licenses:
    • Proven ability to facilitate information and education session with youth groups between local Aboriginal cultural groups.
    • Ability to engage and coordinate programs that engage recognised clinical mental health specialists (for example Registered Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist
    • Understanding of the need for early identification, assessment, and treatment of young people at risk of developing serious mental illness.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide secondary consultation to health care providers.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with other key agencies and to build the capacity of other services to work effectively with young people with emerging mental health issues.
    • Demonstrated understanding of associated services impacting on Youth Mental Health inclusive of the referral processes, care coordination and case management associated with these services and a capacity to work in partnership and collaboration with these service providers.

    Mandatory compliance requirements of the position:

    • A Certificate of Aboriginality
    • Relevant tertiary qualifications.
    • Previous Experience in Aboriginal Health is Highly Preferable
    • Australian Drivers Licence
    • Working With Children Check
    • Proof of COVID vaccination
    • National Criminal Record Check
