Salary Academic Level B Base $127,436 - Level C Base $156,103 + 17% superannuation, with loading as appropriate dependent on clinical experiences

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is the flagship program of Sydney Medical School. There are approximately 220 Commonwealth Supported Places for medicine each year. Our goal is to attract, support and graduate Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander doctors in each of our cohorts. We currently have 22 Indigenous students enrolled in the MD.
About the role
The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint an education-focused Senior Lecturer in First Nations Health with a strong clinical background and a demonstrated commitment to supporting and mentoring students throughout their degree.
This role places a strong emphasis on translating clinical knowledge and lived experience into high-quality teaching and learning. The successful candidate will apply Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges, cultures, and ways of being, knowing and doing to support student learning, clinical readiness and progression, contributing to improved First Nations health outcomes. The position will make a significant contribution to the design, delivery and evaluation of culturally responsive teaching, while providing ongoing mentorship and academic support to students from entry through to completion.
The role also contributes to the University’s strategic priorities in Indigenous Health and supports the University’s broader commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment, inclusion and culturally safe education. It offers the opportunity to play a key role in developing future health professionals through clinically informed teaching and sustained student support.
The primary role of the Senior Lecturer (Indigenous Health) is to contribute to the teaching and learning efforts within the MD Program and provide support and guidance for our indigenous students enrolled in the MD.
About you:
You will be a respected Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health professional with clinical experience and a strong commitment to improving First Nations health outcomes through teaching, learning and mentorship. You will bring practice-informed expertise to your teaching, drawing on clinical, community and professional experience to deliver high-quality, culturally safe and relevant education for students across health disciplines.
You will support student learning through culturally responsive teaching approaches and provide meaningful supervision and mentorship to undergraduate students and early-career health professionals, fostering confidence, capability and culturally safe practice.
You will be an effective communicator and collaborative colleague, able to build trusted relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, and academic and clinical partners. You will contribute to the University’s strategic priorities in Indigenous Health and support the University of Sydney’s commitment to being a culturally safe and supportive place to work, learn and teach for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Key requirements
undertake independent teaching and co‑teaching in First Nations Health, contributing to outstanding educational design, delivery, evaluation and learning outcomes.
engage in high‑quality teaching and learning experiences that meet the University’s expectations and standards for education, and participate in educational activities appropriate to professional qualifications and experience.
design and deliver culturally informed training, teaching, and learning experiences that support student needs and meet established curriculum requirements.
support high‑quality learning experiences for both First Nations and non‑Indigenous students that align with curriculum and accreditation standards.
contribute to curriculum development within the School, including the co‑design and delivery of multidisciplinary teaching that embeds First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing as standard practice across non‑Indigenous subject areas.
engage in supervision of undergraduate research students, ensuring effective guidance and alignment with School, Faculty and University requirements.
carry out administrative tasks relevant to the discipline area and contribute to the effective functioning of teaching and learning activities.
contribute to a positive workplace culture where diversity of thought, collaboration, excellence and achievement are valued, supported and enabled.
understand and contribute to the University and Faculty strategic agenda in Indigenous Health.
engage respectfully and meaningfully with First Nations peoples and communities, including the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector and the Faculty First Nations Staff Network, building reciprocal relationships grounded in trust and respect.
engage beyond the University to develop a professional profile through conferences, seminars, outreach and community‑focused activities.
undertake other duties appropriate to the classification level as required.
Level B:

A developing research profile in discipline or area of expertise.
Proven experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity.
Proven experience supervising and mentoring others
Demonstrated understanding of the subject-matter within the discipline
Experience in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations or similar
Experience in teaching and learning, as evidenced by participation in team teaching and teaching in a variety of settings
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Level C:

Demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
Demonstrated understanding of the subject-matter within the discipline
Experience in supervising or mentoring others
