About Ngangkita Ngartu

Ngangkita Ngartu (Aboriginal Family Birthing Program) is a specifically designed service to meet the cultural and clinical needs for Aboriginal women and non-Aboriginal women with Aboriginal babies accessing care at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Ngangkita Ngartu provides a model of care, developed on Grandmothers Law and Birthing on Country Principles. Ngangkita Ngartu is a cultural model with a clinical partnership. Aboriginal Maternal Infant Care Practitioners/workers work in partnership with midwifery workforce to provide antenatal care, postnatal home visiting, and cultural support throughout the journey of the woman through WCHN. The role requires a blend of clinical expertise, communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure while providing high-quality, empathetic care.

About the role

Join the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a Senior Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) Health Practitioner for the pivotal coordination between cultural, clinical and community knowledge and lived experience within a multi-disciplinary team. 

Key duties of the role

• Provide the pivotal coordination between cultural, clinical and community knowledge and lived experience held by AMIC staff, with that of Registered Midwives, Obstetric/Medical Practitioners, and multi-disciplinary teams, to provide culturally appropriate, safe and responsive antepartum and postpartum care;

• Undertake line management, coordination and leadership of AMIC practitioners and trainees and their service provision, within Ngangkita Ngartu, to achieve quality cultural client care and outcomes within the service.
• Support the team to contribute to a primary health care focus for all Aboriginal women, non-Aboriginal women pregnant with Aboriginal babies and their families accessing services within Ngangkita Ngartu.
• Works in partnership with Maternity Unit Managers to support outcomes of AMIC and Midwifery practices 

Skills and Experience

• Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, Practice or equivalent.
• Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care Qualifications at Diploma level.
• Registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia.
