The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals.
The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Supervising Director of Multilingual and Cultural Education Department, the Native American Education Instructor plays a vital role in supporting the academic success and cultural enrichment of Native American students across the district. This position is responsible for implementing culturally responsive instruction, fostering strong relationships with students and families, and promoting awareness of Native American heritage within the school community. This is a part-time position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver culturally relevant lesson plans aligned with Title VI grant objectives.
- Assist in creating and distributing culturally and academically relevant materials (e.g., newsletters, flyers).
- Serve as a liaison between families, schools, and the district to share program information and resources.
- Collaborate with students, families, teachers, and support staff to enhance academic performance and social development.
- Identify and enroll eligible Native American students in the program.
- Support district staff by providing accurate, culturally appropriate content for classroom use.
- Maintain student records including attendance, academic progress, and program participation.
- Assist in managing supplies and materials aligned with program goals.
- Assist in planning and supervising field trips, cultural events, and community engagement activities.
- Work collaboratively with program staff to deliver high-quality academic and cultural experiences.
- Manage a flexible part-time schedule to serve students in grades K–12 across multiple district sites.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Native American cultures, histories, and traditions.
- Experience working directly with Native American students, families, and communities.
- Strong commitment to preserving and teaching Native American heritage.
- Proven ability to collaborate with educators and administrators to implement culturally responsive programming.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field (preferred).
- Reliable transportation to travel between district sites.
- Preference given to candidates of Native American descent, in accordance with Indian Education Program guidelines.
- Training or experience in Culturally Relevant Education (preferred).
- Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and community stakeholders
- Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
- The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $101.75 to the candidate.
