The Indigenous Programming Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of Indigenous cultural and family outreach programing for Grande Prairie Public School Division. The Indigenous Programing Coordinator works directly under the supervision of the Director of Student Supports and will work collaboratively with school-based Principals, Family Outreach Workers, and Indigenous Liaisons.
All students’ learning experiences are advanced by the strength and diversity of Indigenous foundational knowledge. Advancing Truth and Reconciliation, and building capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect for all reinforces engagement and creates conditions for growth and achievement.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in human services, community support, or program coordination (such as Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Indigenous Liaison).
- Knowledge and experience of Indigenous culture, history, and traditions, with an understanding of the impact of colonization and intergenerational trauma.
- Previous experience in case management, program planning, or staff supervision.
- Excellent advising and conflict resolution skills, as well as a high level of diplomacy, tact, and judgment necessary when dealing with difficult situations.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development of the Division’s plan for applying foundational knowledge about Indigenous culture.
- Work collaboratively with and lead a team of Indigenous Liaisons
- Work collaboratively with Administration and Division staff to develop plans and initiatives to support at-risk Indigenous students.
- Support alignment of resources and build capacity of the school community to support reconciliation within our school communities.
- Hiring, supervision and management of the Indigenous Liaisons in Division schools.
- Develop, coordinate and support effective programming for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.
- Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships and positive relationships with Indigenous leaders and community members within the division.
- Facilitate partnerships and act as a liaison with various community Indigenous services.
- Plan and actionize professional learning opportunities for school community members to build their knowledge, skills, and attitudes of foundational knowledge and reconciliation.
- Establish proactive relationships with community and government groups that would support students and their families.
- Support effective communication and facilitate meetings with students, families, school staff and community partners.
