We remain as determined as ever to be the best it’s possible to be.

About Pro Bono

Through our pro bono practice, Australia’s first, we use the law to assist people to realise their fundamental rights and freedoms, take advantage of the opportunities our society offers and change the systems that adversely affect their lives. We also support not-for-profit organisations supporting people who are disadvantaged.

We are particularly known for our work with First Nations peoples and communities. This work makes up around half our pro bono caseload. We also focus on providing services to refugees and asylum seekers, people with disabilities and in human rights matters.

We are proud of our work in rural and remote Australia. We frequently travel to these communities to provide legal services.

Our pro bono group includes an experienced team of eight lawyers, one special counsel and two partners dedicated entirely to pro bono work. The team undertakes its own matters and also supports pro bono work by lawyers across all the firm’s practice groups.

We have close relationships with the access to justice sector and with our clients and their communities throughout Australia. Those relationships inform the work we take on.

About the role

As a member of the pro bono team, you will work with people and organisations on a broad range of access to justice matters. Your work will range from litigation across most jurisdictions to  non-litigious work such as governance for not-for-profits, law reform and community legal education.

The role is based in the Sydney office, with flexibility to work from home up to two days per week depending on the needs of the team. The team’s in-office days are Tuesday and Thursday.

About you

The successful candidate will be a high-performing First Nations (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander) lawyer with demonstrated capacity to provide quality legal services across many areas of law and engage in law reform, advocacy and legal education. In addition, you will have:

  • Experience or demonstrated capacity to undertake access to justice work for First Nations people and communities, including litigation and work for not-for-profit organisations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high caseload across many areas of law
  • Strong analytical, communication and drafting skills
  • The ability to work effectively with clients from a range of backgrounds
  • The ability to build relationships that help us understand our clients’ legal needs
  • The ability to work both autonomously and in a team

You will also need to be prepared to travel interstate and to regional, rural and remote areas as required.

What we will offer you

This role will see you working in one of Australia’s leading pro bono teams on a broad range of matters. You will have the ability to gain hands-on experience on high-quality and interesting matters and the opportunity to help shape our work with First Nations’ communities.

G+T will offer you a friendly, flexible and professional working environment. In addition to top of market remuneration, we provide our people with benefits such as 26 weeks paid parental leave, additional annual leave, a subsidised cafe, subsidised gym membership, end of trip facilities, exclusive retail discounts, social events and much more which you can review here. http://bit.ly/GTFLYER
