Job Description Summary

The mission of the National Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages (National BoL) is to work with endangered language communities to build capacity around methods in archives-based research for community-directed revitalization efforts.

The Director will carry forward the established vision for the National Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages (National BoL) housed within the Myaamia Center at Miami University. The Director will oversee all activities related to National BoL including staff supervision, fundraising, fiscal management, public relations, program development, technology development and strengthening stakeholder relationships. This position will have rank and tenure in the English Department at Miami University.

Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Development—Tasks include:

  • Support and implement the National BoL mission, vision and strategic plan that advances programmatic goals and objectives.

  • Supervise Myaamia Center staff activities that have been assigned to support National BoL.

  • Advance the impact National BoL has on the ability of tribal communities to build capacity for archive-based efforts that support community language goals.

  • Advance training for apprentice and fellowship programs.

  • Report regularly to the Executive Director of the Myaamia Center.

  • Maintain and organize records related to programs, participants and evaluation outcomes.  

Fiscal Responsibilities & Fundraising—Tasks include:

  • Oversee and manage the organization's budget and maintain a high level of fiscal responsibility.

  • Maintain and build new relationships with potential donors, granting agencies, and foundations for ongoing program support and growth.

  • Work with Myaamia Center executive director regarding long-term budgetary and staff needs.

Public Relations, Collaboration and Networking—Tasks include:

  • Build and maintain relationships with various archives, libraries, and institutions that house Indigenous language holdings.

  • Represent the National Breath of Life program, the Myaamia Center and the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma at conferences, professional meetings, and other events relative to the position.

  • Coordinate with Myaamia Center’s communication department for consistent branding and marketing of the National BoL program.

  • Create messaging strategies that promote the National BoL program and strengthen communication among stakeholders.

  • Respond to media inquiries with assistance from Myaamia Center internal communications specialists.

  • Manage and grow the organization’s social media presence.

  • Coordinate with Myaamia Center’s social media specialists to maintain websites and software platforms used by National BoL.

Technology Development—Tasks include:

  • Coordinate with the Myaamia Center’s technology department to maintain all National BoL technology systems including websites, databases, apps, social media and software tools that support programs.

  • Through interactions with the NBoL end users of the technology systems, identify and prioritize  desired modifications to the technology systems and communicate those requirements to Myaamia Center’s technology department.

  • Develop and enforce appropriate data management policies, user agreements, and privacy and security compliance that support the data sovereignty needs of communities that engage with National BoL require.

  • Ensure appropriate backup, recovery and cybersecurity systems are in place.

  • Identify opportunities to use digital tools to improve operations and programs.

  • Oversee software training strategies to insure effectiveness.

Additional Responsibilities—Tasks include:

  • Work with the Myaamia Center’s Office of Assessment and Evaluation to evaluate National BoL programs and community impact.

  • Support the broader efforts of the Myaamia Center as needed.

  • Maintain professional development needs.

  • Attend, as regularly as possible, primary Miami Tribe annual events.

Other duties as determined.

Travel – This position requires travel (some weekends) for community visitation, annual Miami Tribe events, and research related to this position.

Work Hours/Schedule: Monday thru Friday; some evenings and weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Bachelor's degree by date of appointment; experience working directly with Native American communities engaged in language and cultural revitalization with a proven track record of developing successful programs that strengthen tribal community relationships; experience in language archive development and maintenance including use of existing software that support language documentation and revitalization activities.

Consideration will be given to candidates with Master’s degree in linguistics, Indigenous education, language revitalization, second language acquisition, archive development or related fields; proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations; supervision of others; ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, display strong commitment to student learning, communicate effectively and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the University; strong communication, administrative, counseling and computer skills.
