The ideal candidate will have familiarity with the history and culture of the Vermont Abenaki people and/or a strong desire to learn more. The position entails working directly with Abenaki students to provide academic coaching and support for organizational skills, as well as social-emotional counseling and program coordination for cultural experiences. An essential role for this position will be coordination with the Missisquoi Tribal Council, the Title VI Indian Education Consortium of Franklin and Grand Isle Counties, and the Circle of Courage After-School program; liaison with teachers, administrators, and counselors at the school; parent communication; and monthly reports to the Director of Indian Education.
Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; excellent organizational and communication skills; knowledge of adolescent development; and a desire to assist Native peoples.
The program consists of three main components:
Academic support: direct tutoring; homework assistance; coordination with teachers; academic skill building (basic reading, writing, and mathematics)
Social-Emotional support: social skills; counseling and coaching; self-regulation; strengthening of executive function skills (organization, problem solving, planning, impulse control)
Cultural awareness and pride: collaborate with Abenaki resource specialists to create opportunities for cultural understanding and pride
The position entails coordination and communication with the Tribe, parents, and members of the school community regarding all three components. Additionally, careful record-keeping and monthly reports will be required.
