Pursuant of Section 50(d) of the Equal Employment Opportunities Act 1984, the occupant of this position must be of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

 The Opportunity

Do you want to make a difference and join a values-based organisation? Here at The Kids Research Institute Australia our vision is simple – Happy, Healthy Kids. At The Kids, we are committed to improving children’s health and wellbeing, valuing every supporter who contributes to our mission.
The Building Respiratory Equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Health (BREATH) team is passionate about finding ways to improve the health trajectories of children, with an emphasis on lung health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. We now have an exciting opportunity for an Aboriginal Senior Project Officer to join our team.

The Aboriginal Senior Project Officer will support the facilitation of research projects within the BREATH team, with a focus on participant recruitment of non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal children in our studies. All Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander employees will have support from our Kulunga Aboriginal Unit.

Your main responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Support the team with participant recruitment of eligible children, with tasks including face-to-face conversation with families in a hospital setting, setting up appointments and conducting follow up questionnaires.
  • Help liaise with Aboriginal communities and facilitate appropriate community consultation with Aboriginal voices being central to relevant projects.
  • Community engagement with external stakeholders including Aboriginal Medical Services, and travel to regional areas where required. Work closely with Aboriginal Health Workers/practitioners and other clinicians.
  • Assist with entering and checking data in online databases, undertaking data audits, cleaning and support with exporting data.

Conveniently located at Perth Children’s Hospital, this position will be offered for an initial 2-year period. This role will work on a 0.6 FTE basis over 5 days.

About You

The successful candidate will hold experience in the health or community sector, and will possess the following skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, health and wellbeing.
  • Experience in providing health information to communities, families and individuals in a culturally appropriate way.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills, including demonstrated ability to set goals, develop priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Desirable, but not required: understanding respiratory health and the impact of disease, or a lived experience of living with a family member with chronic lung disease.

At The Kids Research Institute Australia, we are committed to building a workplace culture that reflects the communities we serve. We actively recruit support and welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTQIA+ people, people of all ages, and those with diverse lived experiences.
