The Opportunity

As our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Coordinator, you will lead the implementation and ongoing evolution of UniSC’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Career Development Plan. Working closely with internal teams and community partners, you will provide thoughtful guidance to support the attraction, retention, and growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff across the University. Your work will help shape an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can thrive, contribute meaningfully, and feel deeply supported in their career journeys at UniSC.

The University of the Sunshine Coast considers that being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) and the filling of this position constitutes a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth).

The position is therefore only open to Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

You will

  • support the ongoing delivery and thoughtful development of UniSC’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Career Development Plan and related initiatives;
  • provide considered advice across People and Culture and the wider University to help attract, retain and support the growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff; and
  • contribute to positive employment experiences and career pathways that enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to feel encouraged and supported at UniSC.

About you

You’re someone who cares deeply about creating genuine opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to thrive in their careers. You build relationships with ease, and you’re comfortable working alongside community, staff, and leaders to bring people together around shared goals. You’re thoughtful, organised, and proactive, the kind of person who can see what’s needed next and gently guide others toward it. You enjoy making sense of plans and turning them into real outcomes, and you’re confident sharing progress and stories of impact along the way. Most of all, you bring warmth, cultural knowledge and a steady commitment to supporting the success and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff at UniSC.

You will possess:

  • A deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the issues that shape employment experiences, along with the ability to work respectfully and effectively with community.
  • Experience supporting or leading the development and delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment plans, programs or initiatives.
  • The ability to guide and support others, manage priorities with care, and contribute to a positive and collaborative working environment.
  • Confident communication skills with the ability to listen, consult and offer clear, considered advice to a wide range of people.
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to work well across teams and build strong, respectful relationships.
  • Experience facilitating Cultural Awareness and/or Cultural Competency programs, or similar learning opportunities that support understanding and cultural safety.
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity, meeting the genuine occupational requirement as per the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
